Medicine Chest - Tried and True Home Remedies
"J. R. Watkins Medical Company" was the original name of our company. Medicinal products were
our specialty; liniments, salves and other home remedies. Some of these products remain among our customers' favorites today - White Cream Liniment, Red Liniment and Pain Relief Spray.Shortly after the close of the Civil War, J. R. Watkins began to bottle a Liniment according to a
special formula. At first he supplied this Liniment mainly to his friends and neighbors. Soon,
however, these friends began telling their friends about it, and J. R. Watkins found the demand for
his Liniment growing greater day by day. This Liniment became widely known for its remarkable
ability to relieve aches and pains. In 1868, the same year General Grant was elected President
of the United States, J. R. Watkins founded the business which today bears his name.
J. R. Watkins was way ahead of his time. He knew he had a product that worked and wanted to tell others
about it. He started out small, but the business grew into a national empire simply through word of mouth.
In 1868, J. R. Watkins sold his first bottle of Red Liniment, featuring natural ingredients from the Asian evergreen
camphor tree and the red pepper plant. It was a fantastic product then, and is still a popular product today -- as
